The gown appeared in Thai history for the first time when Phra Wisut Sunthon (Kosapan) was an ambassador. He went to make good relations with King Louis XIV of France. Before that, wearing a gown had a long history in both Europe and the United States.
In the 12th century, students at many European universities wore overcoats and hats to their classes in the winter to keep warm. Over the next two centuries, there was a written requirement that a tunic be worn even if it wasn't in the winter. This tradition spread to the United States. But when the United States declared independence from England, therefore, it was stipulated that gowns were worn only on graduation days.
Thailand began to use the gown to accompany academic standing since 1897, known as the barrister's shirt. For those who have passed the bachelor's degree exam. Chulalongkorn University is the first university to offer academic education for non-law graduates.
At present, gowns are designed differently depending on the educational institution. Most of the fabrics will be improved to be lighter, more in line with the weather conditions of Thailand and cancel the hat.
All graduates have the right to wear a gown in various ceremonies. That must show the credentials of the wearer even though they didn't attend the graduation ceremony.
