December 2, 1975, the Lao People's
Revolutionary Party proclaimed the
transition of government from a monarchy
under the constitution to a socialist
state, and today is designated as Laos
National Day.
Laos, also known as the Lao
People's Democratic Republic, is
ASEAN's only landlocked country. The
vast majority of the land is
mountainous. The capital is called
Vientiane. The population is around 7
million. The official language is Lao.
The currency is kip, which at the
current exchange rate equates around
100,000 kip to 156 Thai
baht.
