During King Rama IX's reign, Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, then a College of Teacher Education, obtained royal permission to build a Buddha image in royal architectural style. They requested that the royal initials be placed on the sacred cloth covering the Buddha image. However, His Majesty determined that the royal initials should represent a symbol of Her Majesty Queen Sunandha Kumariratana, which would be more suitable.

        When the Buddha image had been completed, His Majesty graciously named Phra Phuttha Sunanthakorn and placed as a symbol of blessings for the university.
