The Moon's far side is often mistakenly called the "dark side," but it receives just as much sunlight as the near side. This rugged, heavily cratered terrain has a thicker crust and fewer dark, flat plains compared to the near side. The far side was first photographed by the Soviet Luna 3 probe in 1959
