In addition to Doctor
Bradley, who created a printing house
during King Rama III's reign,
another religious missionary founded a
printing house to print religious
publications but was very successful in
printing and distributing Thai
literature. Especially the works of
Sunthorn Phu.
Samuel J. Smith, or Dr. Smith,
traveled to Siam as a Christian
missionary around 1849 and established a
printing house in Bangkok to publish
theological works. However, it was later
determined that this printing firm had
only printed two religious works. The
rest consists of nirat, proverbs,
chronicles, and tales that have nothing
to do with religious
promotion.
These works and poetry, notably
Sunthorn Phu's compositions, such as
Phra Aphai Mani, have already gained
popularity in Thai society in the form
of oral speeches and performances, which
have limited distribution and risk being
forgotten. Dr. Smith's printing
house made the writings more publicly
available, and they have been preserved
as historical documentation to this
day.
