The weather has been quite unpredictable lately—shifting between intense heat and heavy rain. These conditions allow germs to spread easily and grow rapidly. The Academic Resource Center would like to invite everyone to check and learn how to handle 6 common illnesses that often arrive with the rainy season.

Influenza - typically presents with a sudden high fever, chills, headaches, and severe muscle aches. Protection is best achieved through annual vaccinations and wearing a face mask in crowded areas.

Dengue Fever - characterized by a high fever for more than two days, pain behind the eyes, and red spots on the skin. You can prevent this by eliminating stagnant water around and inside your home to break the life cycle of mosquitoes.

Leptospirosis - involves a high fever and muscle pain, particularly in the calves and thighs. Prevent infection by avoiding walking barefoot through floodwaters. If contact is unavoidable, wear boots and wash your body thoroughly immediately afterward.

Conjunctivitis - causes redness, irritation, and unusual discharge from the eyes. Stay protected by washing your hands frequently and avoiding sharing personal items with others.

Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease - most common in young children, identified by blisters or sores in the mouth, palms, and soles of the feet. Parents and schools should focus on sanitizing shared items and regularly screening children for symptoms.

Diarrhea - involves loose stools, abdominal pain, and nausea. This can be prevented by eating freshly cooked, clean food and washing your hands every time before meals.

It is essential to keep your home clean and organized to prevent it from becoming a breeding ground for germs or disease carriers, especially during rainy periods or floods. Shower immediately after any contact with rain or floodwater to wash away potential contaminants.
