After many years of
fighting for the right to legally
married. In 2001, the Netherlands became
the first country to legalize same-sex
marriage, followed by Belgium and parts
of Canada in the years since.
Taiwan was the
first country in Asia to legalize
same-sex marriage. Thailand is
ASEAN's first country to pass equal
marriage laws. There are currently 39
countries that have legalized same-sex
marriage with certification for the
entire country or specific areas in the
country.
Thailand's marriage equality law
will take effect 120 days after its
publication in the Royal Gazette. As a
result, same-sex couples have the right
to engage and marry, register
marriage-divorce, manage assets acquired
during marriage, inherit state benefits
and welfare as a married couple, and
consent to medical treatment, including
the right to create a family and adopt
children.
