Every 25th December, Christian children around the world look forward to receiving gifts from Santa Claus.  Who will drive a sleigh with 9 reindeer to the sky to distribute gifts to the children.

Why was the reindeer a suitable beast for this great mission?

Heat retention

The reindeer are native to the Arctic landscape where temperatures are below -30 degree Celsius. Reindeer developed a body with two layers of hair and 1 square centimeter of skin can have up to 2000 hairs, ten times more than a human hair. This dense fur protects the cold from the outside and keeps warm inside. In addition, the reindeer has a special circulatory system. The arteries and veins that carry blood to the heart are intertwined. This allows the heat from the warm arterial blood to pass into the cold veins. The heat exchange in the reindeer's nose veins gives it a red nose.

Physical fitness

Reindeer are herbivores. One of the reindeer's staple foods is lichens that are common in the Arctic. This makes the reindeer not have to accumulate fat in the winter. The reindeer is the only mammal that digests lichen.

Eye sight

The arctic is a place with low light, especially in winter. The reindeer evolved to live even in the dark. The reindeer's eyes change color from golden brown to blue in winter for better visibility. Which is a feature suitable for working all night on Christmas Eve.

Stability

Eeindeer develop large crescent-shaped hooves that are good at walking on snow. This hoof contracts and becomes stiffer in winter to reduce the area exposed to snow and help prevent slipping.

Movement

Each year reindeer migrates more than 5,000 kilometers, more than any other land mammal. In one day can travel up to 55 kilometers and also reach speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour. It's an amazing speed that should help lighten the load on a busy night. Reindeer that can maintain body heat, see in the dark, stand upright on slippery surfaces, and find food in the harshest environments. This invaluable skill was a perfect fit for a grand mission for children. everyone on Christmas eve night.
