The Ghost Festival (Sart
Chin Day) falls on the 15th day of the
7th lunar month in the Chinese calendar.
It is a day when Chinese people believe
the "Gates of Hell" open to
allow spirits to visit the human realm
and receive merit. This is an important
period for expressing filial piety and
making major merit.
On this day, tradition
holds that you should refrain from
getting a haircut, avoid traveling long
distances at night, and never answer
mysterious voices calling out to
you.
