Celebrated every year on August 31st, Merdeka Day (Hari Merdeka) marks Malaysia’s independence from British rule in 1957.
The celebration kicks off on the night of August 30th with midnight countdowns and fireworks, followed by a grand parade at Merdeka Square or Putrajaya on August 31st featuring military marches, cultural performances, and colorful floats. Throughout August, the entire country lights up with Malaysian flags on display everywhere.
