A subway station in a metropolis with towering skyscrapers may seem like an unsuitable place for farming.
But Farm8, at South Korean tech startup decided to build a greenhouse for hydroponics inside Sangdo Station of the Seoul subway since September 2019.
More than 30 cultivars of organic plants including greens, flowers and microgreens are grown in glass chambers under LED lighting and automated cultivation.
Farm8 confirmed that this underground vertical farm is 40 times more efficient than conventional farms, occupying only 394 square meters, yet producing up to 30 kg of fresh vegetables per day.
Most of the produce is served in salads and smoothies in the nearby Farm8 café.
