4th October 1957, the Soviet Union launched the Sputnik satellite ascend to Earth's orbit.
Sputnik 1 is the world's first satellite. It has a diameter of 58 cm or 23 inches. It has 4 external radio antennas to broadcast radio waves and has an elliptical orbit around the earth.
Sputnik suffered a disruption and crashed into the atmosphere two months later.
