Michelangelo, also
known as Michelangelo Buonarroti (6
March 1475 - 18 February 1564) was an
important Renaissance painter,
architect, and sculptor.
Michelangelo rose
to prominence at the age of 26 by
carving a massive marble that had been
left unfinished by previous artists for
over 40 years. His success with the
David sculpture made him famous
throughout Italy.
Aside from David,
important works include a marble
sculpture called Pietà, which is
currently housed in St. Peter's
Basilica in Rome, and he was an
important architect in the construction
of St. Peter's Basilica, which is
regarded as a masterpiece of
architecture in the world. Despite his
elderly state, he spent six years
working on the painting of The Last
Judgment inside the Sistine Chapel in
Vatican City State.
Michelangelo
Buonarroti died in Rome in 1564, at the
age of 88.
