So Sethaputra was born on February 10, 1903, to the Bird's Nest Concessionaire family. He was awarded a royal scholarship to study in England, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree with honors in Geology and Engineering from the University of Manchester. He also became the editor of Samakkhi San, a Thai student newspaper in England.

After returning to Thailand, he was appointed Chief of the Royal Secretariat of the Privy Council. He then resigned from government service to work full-time in the newspaper business.

So Sethaputra had a part in advocating for democracy until he was captured and imprisoned during the Boworadet Rebellion of 1933. Despite the difficulties of his confinement, So Sethaputra began drafting an English-Thai dictionary, which took 20 years to complete. It eventually become a widely used dictionary in Thailand.
