The Republic of the Philippines is a
Pacific Ocean island republic comprised
of 7,107 islands, the capital of which
is Manila. The Philippines is the
world's third-largest
English-speaking country, with a diverse
culture.
The Philippines, with its island-like
setting, is endowed with an abundance of
natural resources and wildlife. There
are multiple natural attractions,
including beaches and waterfalls.
The
Philippines gained independence from
Spain on June 12, 1898, and from the
United States on July 4, 1946, but chose
June 12 as the national holiday to
commemorate the people's united
fight for freedom.
