17th September 1860, Thailand started using coins for the first time.
The first royal mint in Thailand was built during the reign of King Rama IV and was located in front of the Grand Treasury in the Grand Palace. It was called the Sitthikarn Mint. The first minted coin was announced on September 17, 1860, alongside the Pod Duang money.
The first coins made were flat and round with a front image of Phra Maha Phichai Mongkut. On the back, there was a picture of Phra Saeng Chak. There were 5 levels of currenecy: Baht, Half Baht, Salung, Feung, and Semi-Fuang.
