"How about sea
turtles?" turns a popular viral
phrase into genuine environmental
concern on World Turtle Day.
Turtles are known
for their longevity, but their
populations are steadily declining
around the world due to accidental
attachment of fishing gear, illegal
collection of turtle eggs, deaths caused
by sea garbage, problems with decreasing
spawning and feeding areas.
Rising sea
temperatures due to global warming cause
sea turtle eggs to hatch into females in
recent years. When there is no male to
mate with, newly released turtle eggs
have no chance of hatching, becoming a
new threat to sea turtles by global
climate change.
