Learn about
Mpox, a new epidemic and global
emergency.
Although the mortality rate from
Mpox is only 3-6%, the lesions that can
be left behind after infection have
raised awareness in society.
Mpox is an
infectious disease caused by the Mpox or
monkeypox virus. The incubation period
ranges from 3 to 17 days. Patients will
experience flu-like symptoms, enlarged
lymph nodes, and rashes on their face,
arms, legs, and genitals. These rashes
become raised and develop into blisters
and pustules before drying and flaking
off, potentially leaving scars. Most
patients will recover on own initiative
within 2-4 weeks.
Thailand used to give
smallpox vaccinations to all infants
before it was discontinued in 1980.
Those who had received the vaccine had
an 80-85% lower risk of infection.
People in high-risk groups can contact
the Thai Red Cross to get vaccinated for
an additional charge.
Mpox can be
prevented by eating cooked meat,
avoiding direct contact with wild
animals, washing hands frequently,
avoiding close contact with patients,
and not sharing personal
items.
